Excerpt from Tony White | If you look hard enough you will see original film footage from a pilot film I once created to promote a movie idea I had… “Screwloose”… a fantasy adventure that embraced Heath Robinson’s life and work. The really astute amongst you will recognize a young David Thewlis playing the role of WHR, prior to his going on to hugely successful acting career, culminating recently as the (coincidentally named) 'Remus Lupin' character in the 2007 "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" movie. The pilot was co-produced by myself and Simon Channing-Williams, esteemed producer of director Mike Leigh. Sadly, I never did get that movie off the ground either, despite such illustrious individuals being part of the production!

14 NOVEMBER 2007 - New Article
Is His Pen Mightier Than the Wand? David Thewlis doesn't look anything like his most famous cinematic character, Remus Lupin, the lycanthropic Hogwarts wizardry professor from the Harry Potter movies. In fact, shambling down from the L.A. home he shares with his companion, actress Anna Friel -- now a star in her own right with her critically acclaimed new TV series "Pushing Daisies" - and their two - year-old daughter, Gracie, Thewlis bore a much closer resemblance to his formerly most famous film persona, the downtrodden nihilist Johnny from Mike Leigh's 1993 low-life picaresque, "Naked".
There’s always a heavy, and JON POLITO, who plays some version of a tough guy in many Coen brothers films, is puzzled by the terrorizing nihilism of AIMEE MANN and DAVID THEWLIS in “The Big Lebowski.” Like many of California’s cultists, their philosophy has gone from dogma to vengeance.
Pictured, DAVID THEWLIS, is sporting a Dolce and Gabbana jacket, shirt, tie and shoes, Levi's jeans, and LaCrasia gloves (fingerless);
David Thewlis David Thewlis perches on his seat, jangling with bracelets and hippie-ness. He looks considerably more attractive than his screen roles might suggest: whether that is the raggedy man in "Naked", Professor Lupin in the 'Harry Potter' movies or even the identical twin brothers in the opening episode of "The Street". The latter, his first TV role in a decade, features one archetypal Thewlis mise en scène. We are in a welfare office where rows of workers toil under the eye of a monstrous Orwellian clock. Thewlis' character is screaming down the line at a caller to get a *&%$^ job. It is heart-bursting acting - raw, seemingly unfettered, almost comic - and you realise that in such moments few actors can touch Thewlis. Like in "Naked", where his rage was a howl at the world, he has a knack for nailing desperation.

David Thewlis: "What Makes You Tick?" Propelled to unforeseen stardom with his role in "Naked", David Thewlis, 44, is a firm believer in fate. But his real ambition in life is to be a good father.
Globe and Mail posted a duo audio interview with David and author Will Self from the Q&A session hosted at the "International Festival of Authors".

31 OCTOBER 2007 - Another Interview
March of the Penguin Authors Actor turned novelist David Thewlis, here with his debut fiction, "The Late Hector Kipling", stayed on the back patio so he could smoke, where he was mostly left alone - typical of the Canadian response to celebrity. I asked him the difference between film parties and literary parties, and he was quick to offer, "At film parties, you can recognize just about every face there. Here, there could be the world's greatest genius behind you and you'd never know it."
Fiction (With a Twist of Lennon) Actor David Thewlis’ first novel, "The Late Hector Kipling", is a hyper-literate, shockingly funny, and just plain shocking look at vanity, revenge, sex, suicide, death, madness, and murder in the London art world. William Monahan, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of "The Departed", knows about all that.

29 OCTOBER 2007 - New Interview
Putting the Not in "Notting Hill" Actor/writer/man-about-town David Thewlis, who did not star in the Hugh Grant comedy, tells us exactly what he should be known for.
'Some sort of drunken collaboration between Feydeau and Dante'. That's how Hector Kipling describes his life at one stage in his narrative. It is an accurate, if overly self-conscious, summary of the flavour of this novel: a blackly comic, farcical descent into a personal hell.
David Thewlis On Potter's Lupin: I Always Thought He Was The Gay CharacterHe's one of those faces you recognize from countless movies. But for modern film fans, David Thewlis is best known for just one role - Professor Lupin in the Harry Potter series. He's played the part in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" and in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban."
David's interview, reading, and book signing was hosted today in Toronto, Canada. Attendees, keep in mind that David will additionally take part in a Q&A session tomorrow evening (refer to the event schedule for location and time).

23 OCTOBER 2007 - Summary of The Street, Season 2, Episode 1
Thewlis plays identical twin brothers Joe and Harry, one single and footloose, the other feeling trapped in the traditional role of father and husband with a wife he believes no longer loves him. When Harry chokes on a sweet, Joe immediately sees a way out of his prison and makes a snap decision that could cost him everything.
A review session for The Late Hector Kipling aired on RTE Television. Prior to the critique, David provides a brief summary of his novel and reads an excerpt.

03 OCTOBER 2007 - The Late Hector Kipling Review
If you like your comedy black, your satire pointed, and have a keen sense of the absurd than David Thewlis' “The Late Hector Kipling” will be your cup of tea. Biting, sharp, and wickedly funny, it exposes and explodes the conceits and pretensions of modern art with an intelligence and skill that is a pleasure to read.
Domestic Affairs of Anna Friel Hollywood actress talks about the problems of sustaining a long distance relationship and tabloid rumours that drove her round the bend. Anna Friel, 31, shot to fame as Beth Jordache in "Brookside" in the early Nineties and various film roles thereafter. Currently working in LA, Anna lives in Windsor with her partner, actor David Thewlis, and their two-year-old baby daughter.

29 SEPTEMBER 2007 - New Interview
The Book of David David Thewlis has great stories from his acting career. But now he’s written an even better one. Having triumphed at Cannes, worked with Brando and appeared infilmsasvaried as "The Big Lebowski" and 'Harry Potter', David Thewlis has already banked more credibility than most actors see in a lifetime. He's even survived "Basic Instinct 2" with his reputation intact, a not inconsiderable feat under the circumstances.
Interview: David Thewlis It’s really annoying giving interviews for a film when you hate it. You know, the person interviewing you doesn’t like it and you say you like it, but you’re basically lying. With this, I’m really proud of it.

12 SEPTEMBER 2007 - Two Release Dates for The Inner Life of Martin Frost
· 11 October 2007 (Portugal)
· 07 November 2007 (France)
Turning His Hand to Novel Writing David Thewlis, the stringy, rabbit-faced actor, who shot to prominence in Mike Leigh's "Naked", has, in the writing of "The Late Hector Kipling", made a particularly weighty rod for his own back. Set among the sweaty dives of Soho and the pretentious galleries of the East End, the book deals with a young British artist - or should that be Young British Artist? - raised by lower middle-class parents in Blackpool. Thewlis, though he does paint a bit, is not a member of the daub fraternity, but he is from Blackpool and his parents do sound very like Mr and Mrs Kipling. Early on in the book, we find the artist visiting home with his Greek girlfriend. His mum asks incessant questions about his work, while Dad, deaf as a boulder, keeps his eyes on the television.
While appearing today on 'Simon Mayo BBC Radio Five Live' program to promote his new novel “The Late Hector Kipling,” David Thewlis spoke of his involvement in the 'Harry Potter' film series. He noted he will return again to the films, saying he recently visited the set of “Half-Blood Prince” to have a new wig fitted for his role as Lupin, and he also spoke about when he joined the cast for “Prisoner of Azkaban.”
By checking Simon Mayo's spot on the 'BBC' Website, you can listen to David's audio interview; Select 'Friday' (on the link entitled listen again near the top of the page), wait for the download to finish, and advance approximately an hour into the program.

Last night, the premiere of ABC's new television show, Pushing Daisies, was hosted at the 'Hollywood Forever Cemetery'. I attended the occasion hoping to congratulate Anna Friel on her brilliant new role, or perhaps catch a glimpse of her strolling by. Anna's family was there to support her, including David and Gracie. After the screening, I walked over to where they were seated and gave David a tap on the shoulder. I was excited when he turned around and I nervously managed to introduce myself representing 'Thewlis Rox.'
David confirmed that he visits our website! David and Anna are both wonderful and I was very honored and overjoyed to have met them at last. I've posted an entry at the discussion board with details of everything that occured at the event, including meeting David and Anna.
David, from the staff members and myself here at 'Thewlis Rox' - We are flattered, grateful, honored and thankful for your kind words and sincerity. Thank you so much for that unforgettable moment and for taking the time to let us know that you visit our website.
Below are a few pictures that were taken at the event. I quickly asked for David's permission if we could re-post them here and he said 'yes'.
Of course, thank you to Dave (administrator of Anna Friel's Official Website) who passed along information to us regarding the event.
Thank you David and Anna. Thank you.

14 AUGUST 2007 - The Late Hector Kipling
Art Fiction from David Thewlis The latest venture into art-world fiction comes from stage and film actor David Thewlis, otherwise known as Professor Lupin in the 'Harry Potter' films. Thewlis' first novel, “The Late Hector Kipling,” published in London last month and due out from 'Simon and Schuster' in the U.S. in November, is described as a "warm and witty novel about the not so warm and witty world of art," with cameos from the likes of 'Gilbert & George', 'Jake and Dinos Chapman', 'Sarah Lucas' and more. "A sick and brilliant read," says Paper magazine senior editor Carlo McCormick.
Hector Kipling is an artist. He has his health, loving parents, a beautiful girlfriend, good mates, and talent in abundance (or at least, more abundance than most, and certainly more than his friend Kirk, if not quite as much as their other friend, Lenny - although, actually, Hector would argue that while Lenny's received more recognition for his art, most of that recognition is misplaced). What more could he ask for (besides the same level of recognition that Lenny gets, that is)? But once Hector's life starts to unravel, it doesn't take long at all for it to fall completely and irreparably apart. In fact, as Hector discovers, it's amazing just how quickly a life can disintegtrate. From settees to stalkers, con-men to corpses, S&M to the Tate Modern, "The Late Hector Kipling" is a warm and witty novel about the not so warm and witty world of art, and death.

09 MAY 2007 - David Confirmed to Star in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Striped Pajamas Film Shooting in Budapest Principal photography has started in Budapest on Irish writer John Boyne's acclaimed novel "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas". The film tells the story of an unlikely friendship between two boys living on opposite sides of a concentration camp fence. It stars newcomer Asa Butterfield as nine-year-old Bruno, the son of a Nazi commander (David Thewlis), who befriends Shmuel (Jack Scanlon), an inmate of the concentration camp. Vera Farmiga will play the role of Bruno's mother, Elsa. The film was adapted and is being directed by Mark Herman ("Hope Springs", "Little Voice").
David's next prospective project is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Character name is unknown, according to David's status in this film, he is currently on-set filming scenes. Treat as speculation until this role is confirmed.

An interview with Anna Friel, translated and posted this morning on her Official Website;

No word from David recently regarding the progress of his novel nor the title (which he has confirmed is not entitled, The Man’s A Legend, as previously speculated). However, this book entitled The Late Hector Kipling is available for pre-order through Amazon UK and Amazon and both Websites claim 'David Thewlis' is the author. Additionally, Amazon UK features the novel's cover art;
Congratulations to David on the successful publication of his first novel!

27 MARCH 2007 - Paul Auster on The Inner Life of Martin Frost
The otherworldly film tells the story of a writer, Martin Frost (masterfully played by David Thewlis), who, having just finished a novel, decides to take a vacation at the country home of two friends. In fact, the small cast - Thewlis, Jacob, Imperioli and Sophie Auster - spent so much time rehearsing that filming took only 25 days. And by then, said Auster, “we refined it so much that the script we used is absolutely, 100 percent present in the finished film.”
25 FEBRUARY 2007 - The Inner Life of Martin Frost Summary
Having submitted his manuscript to his publisher, renowned novelist Martin Frost needs to recharge himself in seclusion. He is loaned a place in the country--where his isolation is short-lived. For his second feature film, American novelist and director Paul Auster plays with the character from his 2002 novel, "The Book of Illusion". The incomparable David Thewlis essays the writer looking for peace, and Irene Jacob, Michael Imperioli and Sophie Auster play his unwelcome guests. Without missing a beat in moving from the page to the screen, Auster's serio-comic fantasy narrative remains mysterious, haunting, and enticing.
Friel-Good Factor Anna reckons working mothers can cope with anything life dishes out. Anna's career exploded after she snogged a girl in the scouse soap. She's just finished a film with David Beckham about the wags of Real Madrid...and she's not slowing down after becoming a mum.
