24 DECEMBER 2008 - Dedicated to David
‘Thewlis Rox’ is organizing another fan project for David entitled “Dedicated to David”. The staff and myself have been working for months to prepare the foundation of this project and we are extremely excited about it! We wanted to come up with a gift for both David and his fans to enjoy – the project will be a DVD that contains very brief clips from all of David’s films and nearly all of his audio and video interviews (an archive of his on-screen legacy). Additionally, fans can contribute to the content of the DVD by making their own dedicational videos for David.
The DVD will feature rare film footage from David’s performances that have been sent to us exclusively by filmmakers and producers who are eager to share this footage with David Thewlis fans. This project will not only be given to David, but boxes of DVDs will be sent to his agent in both London and Los Angeles. DVDs will be available to fans free through ‘Thewlis Rox’. Once the project is completed, the staff and I will take requests for DVDs and distribute them as soon as the project is completed. A deadline for content submission is yet to be announced.

04 DECEMBER 2008 - Another New Interview
Earning his Stripes In general, we think of David Thewlis as a thoroughly solid actor who is undoubtedly a good person, even when playing revolting (the pimp who serves neighborhood pedophiles in "Prime Suspect 3"). He has also played romantically obsessed (French poet Paul Verlaine in "Total Eclipse"), a bemused hero (Edward in 1996's "The Island of Dr. Moreau"), and of course a patently good guy (Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter franchise).
Bedtime Stories "Certainly, it's potent, and it definitely feels a little more iconic than any [other costume I've worn]," says Thewlis. "It's a uniform I've seen so many times in the real footage, and in movies, and it even has comedic associations for me, as I grew up with Monty Python. Did you know they were designed by Hugo Boss? It's a strange thing to put on those clothes - they're made to look impressive and intimidating, and you feel that right away."
Commandant Illuminates Nazi Horror in "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" Playing a concentration-camp commandant in "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" - opening here Friday (November 14) - was no picnic for David Thewlis. But donning the swastika and making not-nice on-screen wasn’t as hard for the versatile British actor as one might imagine.
"The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" Tells Holocaust Story from Child's Standpoint "The Boy In The Striped Pajamas" features David Thewlis as the father leading a double life. "Most of the time we see him at home with the children and his wife; we don't even see him that much with the soldiers, so most of it was concentrated on him being a father," explains Thewlis. "There was no other way of doing it but to say I'm playing a loving father, but I keep in my head what else he was doing. Since we're not filming that we're not seeing that, so that was all the research that I did to keep remembering every night that that is what he is doing off-screen. When he is not in the house, that is what he is doing. So it was quite simple to do the affectionate, adoring father, but it was more of a challenge to keep in mind the atrocity."
Q&A: David Thewlis David Thewlis, best known as "Naked’s" angry young punk and Harry Potter’s professor, is nothing like the concentration camp commandant he plays in "The Boy In The Striped Pajamas". Settling into a cup of tea in a hotel room at the Park Hyatt, he’s all flying limbs (not thick-set like Herr Commandant), thoughtful and even a bit shy.
We Kid You Not Hairy Potter: David Thewlis - who plays Harry Potter's werewolf Prof. Lupin - is going to be on full-time duty at Hogwarts for more than a year come February. "We wrapped (Harry Potter and the) Half-Blood Prince ages ago, even though you're not seeing it until next July. But they've split the last book, Deathly Hallows, into two films which they'll be filming concurrently between February 2009 and May 2010."
And, digging ahead into the plot of the books, what of the romance between Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks (Natalia Tena)? Thewlis will allow one tidbit from Half-Blood Prince. "I will say that by the sixth book/movie, we're holding hands and she calls me 'Sweetheart.' Of course we've got some ground to make up, because by the end of the series, me and Tonks have to have a child, because Harry becomes the Godfather. But I've not seen the script, so I don't know how they're going to involve it into the plot."

16 NOVEMBER 2008 - New Interview
Thewlis Continues to Explore the Dark Side of Human Nature When David Thewlis was cast as wizard mentor Remus Lupin in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," it may have been surprising to indie film fans. Among arthouse audiences, the British actor is best known for his portrayal of a sadist who spouts apocalyptic prophecies in Mike Leigh's bleak drama, "Naked." While Thewlis plays a hero in the "Harry Potter" franchise, he continues to explore the dark side of human nature in smaller pictures. His latest, "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas," is a Holocaust tale in which he stars as a Nazi officer whose eight-year-old son befriends a young concentration camp prisoner. The movie opens Friday in New York. Thewlis modeled his character, named Ralph, after Rudolph Hoess, the commandant of Auschwitz, who raised a family while running the death camp. Immediately after wrapping production, Thewlis began work on an installment of the BBC series "The Street," playing identical twins with not-so-identical personalities. Delving into such a different project helped him decompress. The 45-year-old actor doubles as a novelist ("The Late Hector Kipling") and a director ("Cheeky"). He lives in Los Angeles with his girlfriend, Anna Friel ("Pushing Daisies"), and their three-year-old daughter, Gracie. Look for him as Lupin in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," on deck for summer '09 release. Thewlis discussed the contrasts of his career last week during a press day for "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas."
To celebrate the release of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas here in the United States, I'm sponsoring our very own 'Thewlis Rox' contest. The winner (which will be drawn randomly from all entries) will receive a copy of the novel and the film's soundtrack.
To enter, please submit your entry on the discussion board or email 'Contest' to (tannim@davidthewlis.net). Good luck to everyone!

09 NOVEMBER 2008 - New Interview
Interview: David Thewlis British actor David Thewlis may be best known to audiences these days as one of the many regulars of the Harry Potter franchise. But Thewlis is a celebrated author and actor on stage and screen, always pushing the envelope from his work in Mike Leigh's "Naked", making out with Leonardo DiCaprio in "Total Eclipse", and his latest and toughest film to date: "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas". Here he plays a the Nazi commandant of an Auschwitz-type concentration camp where he brings his family. When his son innocently befriends a Jewish inmate, lives change and tragedy occurs. · October 20, 2008 at 7:00pm (Wadsworth Theatre, Los Angeles, California) - "Reel Talk With Stephen Farber".
· Description; "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" - A hit at several festivals, is a powerful Holocaust drama told from a child's point of view. The guest speaker will be the movie's star, David Thewlis.
Sam (Jivefish) and I will be present for this event tomorrow night to bring fans full coverage of the Q&A session.
While we were speaking with David at the reception in Indiana, he had asked us to pass along the following information to his fans in order to help clear up a few things;
David is not involved in The Yellow Mark. Even though it was listed on his IMDB, he had never even heard of the project.
In several articles (including the one we posted from Movies IE, David was misquoted as saying about the Harry Potter films;
"Yeah we're working on the last film, which will be split into two but I'm not really involved in it. I'm not in the last films much. It's a week's work here and there."
What David meant was that he was not in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, or Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince much. He hasn't even been given a script yet for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, so he doesn't know how many scenes his character will have.
Thank you so much David for clarifying all of these for us!

10 OCTOBER 2008 - Article Featuring Both David and Tannim

"The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" and Shared Humanity Tony Watkins and Tom Price discuss The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. In this Culturewatch.tv video, they talk about the many important themes raised by this film, including the shared humanity of the two boys in the face of terrible prejudice and suffering. This video includes interviews and clips from the film.
David Sees Dark Side of Disney “Some people see the word 'Disney' attached to the film and think it’s going to be this saccharine telling of John Boyne’s story, but it’s a fairly faithful adaptation of the book,” says 45-year-old David. “A lot of people cry at the end because it’s pretty grim but there’s no other way of doing that ending and it would be terrible if somehow it was changed to be happy. It’s very important that it’s not seen as a sentimental film because it’s not a sentimental subject matter.”
Interview: David Thewlis, Vera Farmiga and Rupert Friend on "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" is the film adaptation of the best selling book by John Boyne which explores the Holocaust from the perspective of a young boy named Bruno (Asa Butterfield) who befriends someone his own age (Jack Scanlon) across the fence of a Nazi prison camp. It opened in the UK this week and I recently spoke to the actors David Thewlis (Father), Vera Farmiga (Mother) and Rupert Friend (Lt Kotler) who all star in the film.

David Joined by Young co-stars and Dustin at 'Pyjamas' Premiere Also at the screening was David's pal Dustin Hoffman, who treated the gathered crowds to a playful spectacle when he danced down the red carpet with wife Lisa.
26 SEPTEMBER 2008 - Mark Herman on David's Latest Role
No Happy Ending “With specific reference to David’s character, I didn’t want to cast anyone really famous because they had to be a very special actor with all the talent but not necessarily all the profile. In the end, casting David was absolutely right. He has this ability to play ‘ordinary’ while at the same time suggesting he has the capacity to be a mass murderer. Which - in his role as the commandant of a concentration camp - he clearly has."
David Thewlis on "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" He’s an amiable sort of bloke, is David Thewlis. Which is a bit disappointing. Thewlis has such a great line in manic psychos and creepy villains - "Naked", "Prime Suspect 3" and now as the commandant of a Nazi concentration camp in "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" - I was hoping for at least a glimpse into an actorly heart of darkness.

07 APRIL 2008 - New Anna Friel Article
'I'm a lot Better Looking than Last Year': Anna Friel's Extreme Makeover Anna Friel is positively glowing, even though she's just stepped off a nightmarish 16-hour flight. It's not her artfully applied make-up that's causing the effect, however, nor is it the fact she's basking in the phenomenal success of her new American TV show, "Pushing Daisies", which starts here next week. No, it seems the secret of her glow is purely down to her adopting a full-on, high-maintenance Hollywood lifestyle.
The Inner Life of Martin Frost is screening at the 'Australian Centre for the Moving Image' (Federation Square) today (04 April), Saturday at 7pm, and Sunday at 5:30pm.
Screenings will also be showing at 'Paddington's Chauvel' at 7pm (April 11-12).
Brookside to Hollywood: Anna Friel’s Incredible Journey She shot to fame as Brookside’s teenage lesbian, before wowing Broadway as the stripper with a heart in "Closer". In real life, she’s been playing happy families with fellow actor David Thewlis. But now Anna Friel is back in the limelight as the star of "Pushing Daisies", one of the year’s hottest new TV shows.
Brief news blurb about David celebrating his birthday at La Poubelle in LA;
"Orlando Bloom, sharing a quiet dinner with model girlfriend Miranda Kerr at 'La Poubelle' in Los Angeles. After their meal, the two walked onto the patio, where Bloom warmly greeted actor David Thewlis, who was celebrating his birthday with partner Anna Friel ("Pushing Daisies") and a large group of friends inside the restaurant. The guys shared an animated conversation, laughing and chatting while Kerr waited patiently. Bloom and his girlfriend then walked over to a nearby bookstore, cuddling as they decided what to buy."
David - We hope you have an incredible day with your family and friends, many birthday wishes from us to you on your special day!
Additional greetings from fans, forum members, and site visitors have been posted at the birthday thread. Pictures of this years traditional birthday cake are below;

How Anna Friel Went from Lancashire Lass to LA Woman Anna Friel's determination to hold on to her British roots can be observed in almost everything about her, from her accent (Lancashire with just a hint of LA) to her wardrobe - a mix of "high street and designer". Briefly back in London as "Pushing Daisies" - the hit U.S. TV series that has turned her into a major star - is about to be screened on ITV1, she is wearing a scarlet Louis Vuitton coat over Tsubi jeans that she has matched with a Tu vest and ballet pumps (and you can't get much more "high street" than Tu at Sainsbury's).
"I think it's really important to hold on to who you really are, and I am not going to let this new success change me. I am keeping my accent and my own look," says the 31-year-old former Brookside actress with an almost scarily determined expression on her gamine face.

"David had been trying to track me down to tell me a story about something to do with one of my books," Auster says, "so when I called and left a message on his cell phone, he thought that it was one of his friends making a joke. . . . I think he's an undervalued actor of great brilliance."

04 JANUARY 2008 - New Article
David Thewlis and His Hopeless, Hilarious Fiction Even if he hadn’t been the star of maybe our favorite movie of all time, Mike Leigh’s "Naked", David Thewlis would still be one of our favorite actors. Not only that, but he’s a great writer. Thewlis deals in funny, observant rhyming poems and hilarious-but-harsh fiction. Then, every once in a while, he goes and portrays Professor Lupin (clearly the best teacher at Hogwarts) in a Harry Potter movie, just to pay the rent.
This month, Thewlis’s debut novel is being released. It’s called "The Late Hector Kipling", and it features one of the most misanthropic, hopeless pricks of a protagonist that’s ever been wrought by a Man With a Typewriter. As Thewlis’s (non)hero makes his way through the London art world, he systematically lays waste to everything good in his life, from friendship to family to love. And just when you think it can’t get darker, it does. But all along, the book is garnished with Thewlis’s ruthless wit and stop-you-in-your-tracks insights, which are like little life buoys in a sea of violence and betrayal.
