“War Horse” – Currently Available on Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital formatting. Andre Dellamorte from Collider published an extensive review of the release and goes into depth of each feature included on the separate discs;

The format does the film a great service. The Blu-ray comes in a four disc set, which offers the film on Blu-ray, a second disc with supplements, and a DVD and digital copy. On disc one there are two featurettes: “War Horse: The Journey Home” (20 min.) gathers Kebbell, Watson, Irvine, Hiddleston and Watson in one group, editor Michael Kahn, costume designer Joanna Johnston, writer Richard Curtis, production designer Rick Carter, and DP Janusz Kamisnki in the other, with Spielberg and producer Kathleen Kennedy in both for a chance to talk about the making of the film, and “An Extra’s Point of View” (3 min.), which shows how one extra worked every day on the shoot.

Disc two feels anemic for a Blu-ray set. The meat is “A Filmmaking Journey” (64 min.), which covers every aspect of the making of the film, and is a solid behind the scenes look. “Editing & Scoring” (9 min.) explores Spielberg’s relationship with Kahn and composer John Williams. “The Sounds Of War Horse” (7 min.) gives Sound Designer Gary Rydstrom credit for his work, while “Through The Producer’s Lens” (4 min.) lets producer Kathleen Kennedy Shareher on set photos. The content itself is good, but I don’t know why they didn’t put all the supplements on Disc Two and max out the bit rate on the first disc. Likely it’s because there’s also a two-disc set that comes with the first disc Blu-ray and a DVD copy.

“The Lady” – Now available to purchase in the United Kingdom (Region 2 formatting). Chris Wright from What Culture uncovered details of the release, admitting its lack of additional footage and extra content;

Quality – Presented in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1 with a 1080p transfer the overall result is excellent. The visual style is preserved and looks superb with beautifully composed cinematography filling the screen with detail and rich imagery. The colour range is well considered and a light level of grain maintained throughout the film is never overdone. The 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack is equally well done striking the right balance between the more peaceful scenes and the power of the film’s more shocking violence. Eric Serra’s sweeping score is high in the mix but not to the detriment of the rest of the soundtrack.

Extras – With only two featurettes the special features are rather unspectacular. The first, a making of documentary running at just under 30 minutes is a standard affair featuring interviews with the stars and director as well as featuring some moderately interesting behind the scenes footage and background on the development of the film. The other feature is a 20 minute documentary entitled “Happy World Burma, The Dictatorship of the Absurd” which takes a look at life in Burma detailing the more unusual aspects of the regime, however this is a fairly lightweight piece and lacking in any real depth.

“The Island of Dr. Moreau” – Coming Soon (July 24, 2012). New Line Cinema is reformatting several of their pre-released home-video films to retailers this upcoming summer, including the director’s cut version of “Dr. Moreau”. Currently, no specific details (yet) of features, extras, or additional footage have been announced.

The brilliant British actor, director and writer was the guest of honor at the festival – during the Opening Gala of the Off Plus Camera on Friday, David Thewlis received a special award “Against the Current”.

On Saturday,April 14, David Thewlis was the guest of the “Camera On” meeting at the Pałac pod Baranami, during which he answered questions asked by the large audience.

David Thewlis became famous thanks to the role in Mike Leigh’s movie “Naked” (1993). The actor confessed that the characters he plays are often constructed on the basis of people he knows – the same was with the repulsive character of Johnny – “I’m afraid that I once knew someone like Johnny. We were playing in one band … It was a long time ago and he has probably changed, so maybe he will not be angry, that I’m talking aboutit”.

Thewlis also admitted that he would love to play more comedic roles, which are rarely offered to him. “I do not understand why, but directors usually give me roles of sociopaths, wrecks and derelicts. For variety’s sake, sometimes I get the role of an unhappily in love fool, or the Gestapo soldier, but there is rarely a chance to play something funny. Therefore, “Divorcing Jack” is one of my favorite movies”. The Harry Potter series was for him a funny experience in a group of enthusiastic, young actors. “It’s nice to watch these budding talents. It’s really inspiring and encouraging”.

Thewlis is also a writer, and what’s interesting, his novel “The Late Hector Kipling ” was also printed in Poland. The actor revealed that he is already working on his second book, which he hopes to end soon. Thewlis also regretted that he couldn’t stay in Krakow a bit longer – “The city made a huge impression on me. I’ll be back for sure!”.
Feel invited, Mr. Thewlis!
